| ||The South Australian Light Opera Society (SALOS) was formed in 1983, the fourth company founded by Bill Youde, after The Metropolitan Theatre Company, Mayfair Light Opera Society (Later Mayfair Theatre Company) and Galaxy Musical Society.|| |
| ||Bill, a carpenter by trade, was a lover of musical theatre who put his heart and soul into his companies. He directed, performed and wrote musicals, created theatres out of halls, built sets, painted sets and did all he could to keep alive the art of musical theatre.|
SALOS has tried to keep alive Bill's dream. We are the only company in South Australia to regularly produce operettas and variety shows. Our audiences are fed a steady diet of old time musicals, from Gilbert and Sullivan through to Ivor Novello, usually around April and August each year, and a variety show with singing, dancing, skits and much fun in December. In August, we may have a little known musical or a variety show - on three occasions now we have produced the works of Fraser Charlton which use the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan and some of Gilbert's lyrics in shows with completely new and original plots.
| || Just as our shows are older than most, so our performers tend to be older than most. There is a wealth of experience among the many who just love to sing and perform. That said, we welcome younger people as well and were proud to introduce TASA's Young Performer of the Year in 2006.|| |
| ||Like most theatre companies, we are always on the lookout for new talent. Men in particular seem to be in relatively short supply, and especially those rare (and dare I say spoilt) creatures, tenors. We are also keen to welcome anyone interested in the technical side of theatre - back stage, lighting, production, set construction, painting. Someone with organisational skills and an interest in working as Assistant to the Director could find a niche in the company. If interested, keep an eye on the Auditions page for performing, or use our Contacts page.|| |
